About Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga and Flow Yoga

The Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga series is an ancient system of Yoga said to be derived from an ancient text called the Yoga Kortuna compiled by Vamana Rishi. In the 20th century, many yoga teachers, such as Pattahbi Jois, BKS Iyengar and Indra Devi, utilized the Ashtanga Vinyasa series, eventually leading to the development of various Yoga disciplines. Most notably, the Ashtanga Vinyasa is a physcially demanding practice that, through its rigor, can help relieve stress and calm the mind.

"Vinyasa" means "breath-synchronized movement" and Vinyasa/Flow Yoga emphasize fluid movement and breathing from one pose to the next. The breath dictates the movement and the length of time at each pose, and Vinyasa/Flow Yoga places less emphasis on static positions than traditional forms of yoga. Controlling the breath while keeping the body moving from one yoga pose to the next is both mentally and phyically challenging, and improves the body's strength, cardiovascular endurance as well as flexibility.

About Power Yoga

Only when you can be extremely pliable and soft, can you be extremely hard and strong - zen proverb

At Capital Yoga, our primary goal is to increase the physical and mental fitness of our members. Our classes often utilize the technqiues and philosophy of Power Yoga because of its emphasis on strength and flexibility. Power Yoga was developed in the mid 90's, primarily by Beryl Bender Birch and Bryan Kest, who sought to use yoga as a means to erradicate the body's embalances, many of which are physical. Power Yoga awakens the body and mind on the path toward optimal physical health by awakening the mind and body. Unlike Ashtanga Yoga, Power Yoga does not follow a series of poses, and the poses performed in each class vary; the end goal is fitness. Each class ensures that you'll receive a healthy workout that builds strength and flexibility that surpass what's acheiveable in a health club routine.
